Jesus
Rejected at Nazareth
The Gospel:
He
went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed
him. And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who
heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What
is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? Is not
this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Josses
and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took
offense at him. And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor,
except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” And he
could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick
people and healed them. And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he
went about among the villages teaching.
Reflection:
I'm saddened and anxious whenever I
remember the comments from one of our parishioners regarding how the rest of the
faithful reacted for the previous elections. He said in the past, you can
notice the division of the people inside the church. You can identify that
those seated on the left or right pews are pro-opposition or pro-admin.
Sad but true! Untamed political biases
hamper social growth as well as spiritual ascent. Jesus' messages of friendship,
equality, joy, hope and love cannot thrive within the community consumed by the
erroneous views brought about by one's political biases towards the other
party.
This Philippines National Election 2016,
may bring us closer to God by exercising the virtue of humility and acceptance
of defeat not of vengeance and jealousy for those who cannot make it to the
office. Gratitude and servanthood for those graced to win the office.
May Jesus marvels not because of our
hardened hearts but because of our efforts to live His teachings.
God bless us all!
